This Sunday on the blog we have Katlyn Duncan, who has dropped in to say hello and to share some insights into her life as an author.

Please introduce yourself:

I’ve published seven YA titles with HQDigitalUK with genres ranging from paranormal, contemporary, and thrillers.

Did you read much as a child? Are you an avid reader now? Do you prefer books in your own genre or are you happy to explore others?

I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t reading. As a child, I was never given any limit to a number of books I borrowed from the library (I always left with a stack!). My fondest memories were going to the bookstore after school when the newest Goosebumps novel was released!

I am an avid reader still, but with writing full time, I don’t have as much time as I’d like to read. I do make sure I put aside at least thirty minutes a day, though.

When reading for fun, I enjoy reading what I write, but I rely on my book club to bring me out of my comfort zone with reading.

Are you self-published or traditionally published?

I am traditionally published.

Which genre do you write in and why?

My previous published books have been in the paranormal, contemporary, and thriller genres. I am most drawn to those types of stories, so I tend to write in them.

Who has been the biggest influence on your writing?

I’d have to say, my Mom. She always encouraged me to read, which lead to my love of creating my own stories.

Has your country of origin/culture influenced your writing?

I enjoy setting my stories all over New England. While I try to stay away from real locations, I use the places I’ve been in my life and creative freedom to create these settings for my characters.

What part of the writing process do you find most difficult? How do you overcome it?

I find revising the most difficult. When I get my revision letter from my editor, I break the letter down into sections and bullet point each change that the story needs to have. That way I create a checklist, so I make sure I hit all of those points.

Do you have a favourite time of day to write?

I don’t enjoy getting up at five in the morning, but that’s my most creative time and when my family is still sleeping. I can unplug my internet and just write for a block of time without interruption.

What is the best thing about being an author? And the flipside – what is the worst?

I love seeing my hard work out there for readers to enjoy. And while there is no “worst” for me, writing can be a lonely job, and I have to work to find like-minded people to talk to, such as my critique partners or else I get too stuck in my own head.

Is social media an essential chore or something you enjoy? Which forum do you prefer?

The idea of social media is a great thing, but since there are so many platforms, it does turn into a chore sometimes. I prefer Twitter (@katlyn_duncan) for the gifs and writing community while I also like Instagram (@katlynduncanauthor) for the fun pictures.

If you weren’t an author, what would you be up to?

My previous career was in the health field. So, if I weren’t writing, I would probably go back to that.

It’s the last day and the earth is facing oblivion – what book would you read?

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Maybe then, I could find a way to travel back in time and stop the world from facing oblivion or else hang out with a sexy Highlander, even if it was just in my mind!

Please tell us what you are working on or your latest published work.

I’m currently working on a YA thriller novella, but I can’t share much about it now. My most recent release in February 2017 was a full-length YA thriller, AS YOU LAY SLEEPING.
