If you could give any advice to a new writer starting out, what would that be?
Be prepared. You can’t enter this brave new world just armed with a notebook and a pen. We are not writers shivering in leaking garrets in Paris writing our magnum opus supported by Gertrude Stein. Writing these days is a business. And self-publishing is a relentless business where writing is a very small component. Even if you are traditionally published, you will have to do most of the work yourself. Be prepared. Read the self-help books. Listen to all the good podcasts – Joanna Penn’s The Creative Penn Podcast and Mark Dawson’s SPF Podcast. Prepare your platforms. Seriously. You will need Facebook/Instagram/Twitter/LinkedIn/Amazon/Goodreads etc. etc. (or whatever comes next). Magic does happen, but it only happens if you work hard. Don’t be disheartened, aim to be the tortoise and not the hare. Slowly but surely. See, I’m pulling out all the sayings now!
